Adam X

Adam Mitchell, known as Adam X, was born and raised in Brooklyn, growing up four years behind his older brother Frankie Bones. As a teenage graffiti writer under police surveillance, he switched focus around 1990 to help his brother open Groove Records in Bensonhurst, America's first all-techno record shop, and began DJing to stay out of trouble, playing his first gig to a thousand ravers in Los Angeles that September.

Alongside Bones and Heather Heart, he helped launch the STORMraves that established New York's early rave culture, growing from a small Brooklyn apartment party into events drawing thousands. In 1995 the shop moved to Manhattan and became Sonic Groove, with Adam managing A&R and releasing the label's first record himself, and after the store closed in 2004 he relocated the label to Berlin, steering it toward EBM and industrial techno.
