Biography
Chris Gray, from the Mississippi Delta, discovered house music in the spring of 1986 through a mixtape recorded off Chicago's WKKC 89.3 FM, given to him by a cousin. In 1990 he founded the Deephouse Projekt, a research effort into the roots and history of Chicago house music, and after graduating from Mississippi State University in 1992, moved to Chicago to begin producing, drawing inspiration from Larry Heard, Blaze, and Ron Trent.
His first EPs, The Moonchildren and Very Moody, appeared on Britain's Freetown/Subwoofer Records, followed by his 1997 debut album, A Deeper Level of Understanding. He later founded the label Deep4Life and wrote an autobiographical book, Mechanics of Me.
